The City of Suwanee is honored to be named a Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This prestigious designation recognizes Suwanee as one of the top Main Street programs in the state, celebrating the city’s commitment to downtown revitalization, economic development, and community innovation.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to make downtown Suwanee a vibrant destination where people want to live, work, and connect,” said Economic Development Manager Chris Hardin. “Being named a GEMS community is an exciting acknowledgment of that dedication and the collaborative spirit that makes Suwanee so special.”
The GEMS designation is awarded to cities that exemplify excellence in implementing the Main Street Approach, demonstrating a strong track record of preserving local character while driving economic growth. Suwanee is recognized for its dynamic public spaces and forward-thinking planning — qualities that continue to attract residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
Suwanee’s journey to GEMS status began earlier this year, when city staff presented to a panel of judges in the spring. The process culminated with a site visit this fall, where state officials experienced firsthand the creativity, energy, and innovation that define Suwanee’s downtown.

At the October 26 City Council meeting, Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, attended and formally presented the City of Suwanee with the Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) designation and award. Her presentation recognized Suwanee’s continued excellence in downtown revitalization, economic vitality, and community engagement.
“We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state,” said Bennett. “These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together.”
GEMS communities represent the top tier of Main Street programs in Georgia and serve as models for other cities seeking to enhance their downtowns through preservation-based economic development. Suwanee joins this distinguished group with a continued commitment to fostering a thriving, resilient downtown that reflects the community’s unique character and vision for the future.
