The Georgia Main Street Program, launched in 1980 as one of the original pilot programs of the National Main Street Initiative by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, supports downtown revitalization across the state. Housed within the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), the program provides a proven framework for strengthening historic downtowns through preservation-based economic development, small business support, tourism, and public-private partnerships.

The City of Suwanee has been a designated Georgia Main Street community since 2000 and is proud to be recognized as a Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community—one of the highest honors awarded by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The GEMS designation recognizes top-performing Main Street programs that demonstrate excellence in downtown revitalization, economic vitality, and community engagement.

Suwanee earned the GEMS designation in 2025 following a competitive evaluation process that included a presentation to a panel of judges and an on-site visit by state officials. The recognition highlights Suwanee’s thoughtful planning, dynamic public spaces, and continued commitment to fostering a vibrant downtown where people want to live, work, and gather.

As a GEMS community, Suwanee joins a select group of cities serving as models for downtown success across Georgia. This designation reflects the city’s long-term vision, collaborative leadership, and dedication to preserving local character while supporting innovation and growth.
